BOTTOM
LINE:
There
are a couple of funny moments, but these spoof movies have really
run their course (at least if they keep doing them in the same way
every time); at the end of the day, it's a waste of time and you'll
want your money back.
THE GOOD:
I like the idea of making fun
of these never-ending superhero movies that we keep getting from
Hollywood and "Superhero Movie" scores points for by and
large taking cheap shots at the first Spider-Man
movie, although other franchises such as Superman, Batman and X-Men
get a few sequences all on their own. A young kid gets bitten by
a genetically altered Dragonfly and starts exhibiting superpowers,
but he's up against a new nemesis called Hourglass who has a diabolical
plan to suck the life out of every one in the city in order to become
immortal. It's funny, simply because you could almost imagine that
a real superhero movie would have a plot like that. There are some
genuinely funny moments, such as our heroes interactions with certain
animals, and some rather dry and witty lines from Leslie Nielsen
(who just can't stay away from these movies).
THE BAD:
Movies like this are done and
dusted. They should be left alone. The first films of this genre
like Flying High and The
Naked Gun were very well done and funny, not only because we
hadn't seen that type of comedy before, but because it was actually
smart about the way it delivered the jokes (there weren't too many
moments in "The Naked Gun" for example where you weren't
laughing). "Superhero Movie" on the other hand is almost
a slap in the face to those movies because by and large it's relying
on lowest common denominator style jokes which aren't funny. Coupled
with the fact that we've seen these jokes a million times in other
spoofs leaves you with a comedy you don't really laugh with which
defeats the purpose of having made it in the first place. It's sad
now to see Leslie Nielsen just doing these movies (even though he's
the best part about this film); he's a brilliant actor with great
timing as demonstrated in his earlier films, but he's just going
through the motions again here and you have to wonder how many more
times he needs to play the same part. "Superhero Movie"
is a waste of time, and given we have much smarter and wittier comedies
these days, it really shouldn't have been made.
